Occidental is one of three small towns located on the ten-mile long Bohemian Highway in West Sonoma County, California. Freestone and Monte Rio are the other two communities on this scenic roadway. West Sonoma County offers tranquil settings centrally located to the Russian River, the Pacific Ocean, the Sonoma County Wine Country and historical cities such as Sebastopol. Occidental is also only 68 miles north of the metropolitan center of San Francisco. The West Sonoma County/Bohemian Highway landscape is made up of rolling hills and vineyards, peaceful pastures, apple orchards and forests of redwood, oak, bay and fir. In addition to award-winning wineries, you will also find many organic farms in the Occidental region. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking and biking along the coastal hills, along with rafting and other water sports along the Russian River. Whether for a permanent residence or a second home, West Sonoma County is one of the most beautiful places to live in the state.

The towns of Occidental, Freestone and Monte Rio make a serene home base for enjoying Northern California's wonderful natural attractions. Occidental has a population of approximately 400 full time residents (1,200 including the surrounding area.) It has a small, two-block long “downtown” area with shops and restaurants in Victorian era buildings. June through October, Occidental is home to a historic church known for its wonderful acoustics and a Farmer's Market every Friday. Occidental is also just minutes to award winning wineries and plentiful outdoor recreational opportunities. Freestone is called Sonoma County's “first historic district” and is home to several classic western-style buildings. It's situated in a pastoral valley with lovely views of the rolling hills. Freestone's population is 32 and it's home to the Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary. The little town of Monte Rio joins the north end of the Bohemian Highway to the Russian River. It has its own theater, a golf course, tennis courts, restaurants, a world-class wine and cheese boutique, several inns and hotels and one of the Russian River's largest public beaches. The population of Monte Rio is 1,104 residents.

In addition to residential and commercial properties, furnished, short-term rentals are also available in the Occidental region, primarily along the Russian River Valley. The majority of rentals are located in the following communities: Occidental, Monte Rio, Guerneville, Sebastopol, Forestville, Rio Nido, Cazadero and Camp Meeker.
